Customer Reviews

Customer Review: Bought this rack to hold my pelican 130t Angler kayak (2 seater) and my single seater pelican angler on my Chrysler Pacifica and it did not disappoint!! Right out of the box you could feel the quality as this thing is heavy duty. Love that the base is so much wider than the other options online coming in at over 32” as it was perfect for my larger kayak! And the paddle holders kept our van free and clear of those bulky paddles. Mounted easily to the factory oval crossbars with enough room to avoid the bolts from scratching the roof. I also like having the option to lay the center bar flat and mount the canoe or paddle boards that way when you’re only carrying one. I even used the included ropes to tie the front of the kayak off to aid in securing the 13’ beast, but I do not think it is required as the rack held it tightly in place! This rack is worth every penny!!!!

Customer Review: These were so easy to install. 10 minutes tops. They are very easy to use. They hold the kayaks very securely. The included straps and bow/stern ropes work perfectly. I love how sporty they look when not hauling kayaks.I can think of two things to nitpick about, but it doesn’t deserve taking stars away.1. The instructions do not include how to strap kayaks on or how to use the bow/stern ropes. A quick youtube seach helped out a lot.2. The included paddle straps are very difficult to latch, especially with two paddles in them, but I guess it helps them to be secure.I really like these!

Customer Reviews

Customer Review: The rack works great!! Travelled the highway at 65-70mph for about an hour. Rock solid with a 9’10 surfboard on top. All straps inside & on the roof held tight. Installation was easy with straps through the front and back doors. Roof strap retention loops held the extra rooftop strap secure. The neoprene pockets for the inside straps were very handy to wind up & store the extra length of strap and didn’t block rear view vision. Rack and board were very stable. I’ve tried others in the past & the Thurso Surf rack performed the best. Definitely recommend it!

Customer Review: Works great. We use them on the roof of our Nissan PU in conjunction the ladder rack to transport the kayaks to the beach.

Customer Reviews

Customer Review: We have a trawler with 1-1/4” stainless rail stanchions that are angled from the deck. Perfect fit, very sturdy fastener hardware, and easily adjusted to hold our kayak firmly when underway. So easy and quick to get the kayak in and out of the rack that I know we will use it a lot more now. Potential for dissimilar metal corrosion between the stainless steel hardware and the aluminum knobs for tensioning. I plan to periodically remove and Apply a small amount of waterproof grease.

Customer Review: Seems to be solidly made. I like the covers over the foam. My only concern is that I hope it stands up over time to sun exposure. Only time will tell. It was easy to install. Holds my 10’ kayak firmly and is easy to load and unload even alone.

Customer Reviews

Customer Review: Super high quality and is going to last for ages. Most of these kyack roof racks would totally rust out but the powercoating on these is superb. After putting them on the car, I just decided to leave them on.I honesetly don’t know why people are saying that these don’t hold their kyacks well. Even the included straps do a great job at holding things. You just need to make sure you do it right. Watchign a simple youtube video would solve 90% of the issues that people are having. If you secure it well, you can drive off a cliff and they would still stay on.The best part is that they fold and are low profile. Super easy and simple to do. You simply turn a knob to loosen then you can change the angle. Super easy to adjust and work with. For getting the kyaks on the roof of the car, it would of course be difficult no matter what you do. Kyaks can be heavy. However, I was able to get some large 12 foot kyacks on top with little effort.Awesome product and the price is perfect for the quality.

Customer Review: I bought these to replace the original Thule Stacker Rack we had on our van, which never really held our two kayaks very tightly, and also made lots of strap noise when driving faster than 40 mph. These J’s fold very nicely when not in use, allowing us to park in our garage as normal. They’re super easy to install to the roof rack, super easy to fold/adjust, and the straps work just as well, or better than, our Thule straps! Very little to no strap noise when the boats are loaded, and the cushioning foam and rubber are superior! The paddle straps are a very nice bonus, and they work super well, saving even more space in our van’s cargo area! Upon initial installation, I did accidentally over-tighten the nuts holding one of the J’s to the roof bar, causing the plastic wings to snap off. No big deal, though – we just use a standard ratchet/wrench to tighten that one onto the car now. I live in the northern US, and decided to leave these racks on the van even through this past long, cold, snowy winter we had – they survived very well! Only a little bit of surface rust showed up on two of the J’s bolts due to road salt exposure – I’ll be removing them for the winter months from now on. Overall, I’m extremely happy with these, and I highly recommend these for their convenience and durability!

Complete Buying Guide for Best Kayak Racks For Campers

Essential Factors We Consider

When choosing the best kayak racks for campers, we look for a few key things that make a big difference on the road and at the campsite. First, durability is crucial; you want a rack that can handle the weight of your kayak and withstand various weather conditions. Ease of installation and removal is another big one – as campers, we often need to swap gear around, so a rack that’s quick to set up and take down is a lifesaver. Security is paramount; you need to be confident your kayak is safely strapped down, especially on highways. Finally, we consider vehicle compatibility, ensuring the rack will fit your specific car, SUV, or truck, and how it integrates with existing roof bars if you have them. We also looked at models that offer folding or collapsible designs, which are incredibly convenient for campers who might have height restrictions in their garage or at their campsite.

Budget Planning

Kayak racks can range from budget-friendly soft racks to more robust, permanent J-style or hardshell carriers. For campers, a good balance between cost and quality is often the sweet spot. Soft racks, like the THURSO SURF model, are the most affordable and a great starting point if you only transport your kayak occasionally. Folding J-bar racks, such as the Triclicks or FORWODE models, offer excellent value by combining security, capacity for two kayaks, and convenient folding features at a mid-range price point. More premium options, like the Magma rack, are suited for specialized mounting needs and come with a higher price tag, but offer unparalleled durability. When budgeting, also factor in the potential need for additional straps or tie-downs, though many of the racks we’ve reviewed come well-equipped.

Final Thoughts

Selecting the right kayak rack for your camping adventures is all about matching your needs to the right product. Whether you prioritize ease of use, maximum security, the ability to carry multiple kayaks, or a specific mounting style, there’s a rack out there that will fit the bill. Remember to consider your vehicle type, the weight and size of your kayak(s), and how often you’ll be transporting them. With the right rack, you can spend less time worrying about logistics and more time enjoying the great outdoors and the peace that comes with paddling on pristine waters. Frequently Asked Questions

Q: How do I choose the right kayak rack for my camper van?

A: For camper vans, consider the vehicle’s roof load capacity and whether you have existing roof rails. Folding racks are often ideal for camper vans as they can help with clearance. Ensure the rack is rated for the weight of your kayak and has a secure mounting system compatible with your van’s roof structure.

Q: Can I use a kayak rack on a car with a sunroof?

A: It’s generally not recommended to mount kayak racks directly over a sunroof, especially hard racks, due to the risk of damage from the kayak’s weight or vibrations. Soft racks that use door jambs for attachment might be a safer bet, but always check the manufacturer’s guidelines for your specific vehicle and rack.

Q: How many kayaks can a typical camping kayak rack hold?

A: Most J-style kayak racks are designed to hold one or two kayaks per pair. Soft racks can typically hold one kayak, sometimes two depending on their size and stability. Always check the product specifications for the maximum capacity.

Q: Do I need special tools to install a kayak rack for camping?

A: Many kayak racks designed for campers are “tool-free” or require only basic tools like a wrench or Allen key. This is a significant advantage for those who aren’t mechanically inclined. Always check the product description to confirm installation requirements.

Q: How do I ensure my kayak is securely fastened to the rack?

A: Proper fastening involves using the provided straps correctly, ensuring they are snug and that the kayak does not shift. For added security, especially on long trips or rough roads, consider using bow and stern tie-down straps that connect to points on your vehicle’s frame. Learning proper tie-down techniques is essential for safe transport.

Getting your kayak to those perfect camping spots is easier than you think with the right rack. We’ve covered some of the top contenders that balance durability, ease of use, and value for money, all essential for any camper. Whether you opt for a heavy-duty J-bar, a versatile soft rack, or a specialized boat rack, you’re one step closer to enjoying your time on the water. Happy camping and happy paddling!
