Customer Reviews

“So this product performed better than I expected. I decided to test it out on my back porch last night since I received it yesterday, and I knew that the temperature was going to be a low of 28°, so I expected this 20° bag to keep me fairly warm, but most people agree that the temperature rating on the bags is a survival rating and that you shouldn’t expect to be comfortable at the actual survival rating and that you should probably buy a bag that is 10° warmer than your intended temperature if you want to be comfortable. However, this bag, paired with a 4.4R value pad, kept me very warm and comfortable at 28° without a tent or tarp, without wind, on my back porch. The sleeping bag itself is about 2 and 1/2 lb and the material seems thin , but it works and Is much more compressible than my 0° bag. You can get a thinner, lighter, more compressible down bag if you’re willing to drop significantly more money on it, but for the price, this is an extremely good value and a good bag.”

Customer Review

“I went with the Altos 20-deg bag (blue) as an upgrade to an old-but-warm bag that is just too bulky for back country hiking. Took this out for a weekend campout and pleased with the quality. The Altos straight out of the bag for first use needed a few hours to expand the filler enough to provide decent insulation and by the following day of being left open it appeared to be fully expanded and quite fluffy. Both nights the temps were in the 30’s and I was plenty comfortable with boxers, a t-shirt and socks as my personal layer. The footbox is a little tighter than I’m accustomed to but I did not feel constricted in any way and retained enough space where I could just barely slide my leg up in order to adjust my socks without having to unzip the bag (I’m 5’10”, 170lb). The draft blocking flap around the inside seemed a little low but still effective (I didn’t bother cinching it) and the cap/top of the bag has a nice bit of padding and insulation that was very comfortable and allowed me to sleep without a beanie cap, which was a really nice change from my usual cold-weather camping. This bag is rated as a 20-deg bag and I’m not confident it would keep me warm enough at that temp without wearing thermals and definitely heavy socks. I noticed that wherever my shoulder or knee happened to press against the fabric, I felt a cold spot. Not enough to get a chill, but noticeably colder. The footbox was warm enough and was better the second night after the fill thoroughly expanded. Overall I’m happy with this bag.”

“Took up to Joshua Tree National Park in the end of January, held up wonderfully. Inside zipper makes it easy to zip up. A little on the expensive side but the warmth you get from it makes up for it. Recommend padding if you’re going to be on rocky terrain. It’s a little bigger than most sleeping bags however, because of the fleece lining.”

“This sleeping bag is really lightweight and for comfortable for warm weather. I could fit it in my carry on backpack and used it on a safari camp for 8 days. Packing and repacking daily was trouble free. This is a good buy!”

Customer Review

“I needed a lightweight sleeping bag for my backpack, but wanted one that wasn’t down (so I could wash and dry it in case of bedbugs) and wasn’t mummy-style (so I can stretch out better). This sleeping bag seems to do the trick.I like the space due to the rectangular shape. I’m 5’8” and midsize and it’s roomy enough to be comfortable. The hood feature is also nice and one of the reasons I picked this model.I don’t like: as others have said, it’s not a cold weather bag. I wouldn’t use it much below 10C, probably. You also need to zip it open and closed carefully, as the fabric gets stuck regularly. Take your time and you’ll be fine.”

“Used this for my son’s recent camping trip in a conservation area, and it absolutely served the purpose. He found it cozy, warm, and easy to pack and carry, which made the whole experience much smoother. As a parent, I appreciated how durable and well-designed it is without being too bulky. The colors are fun and the overall feel is high quality. It held up well against the cool night temperatures and kept him comfortable throughout. I also like how easy it is to clean—just a quick wipe-down when he got home. Definitely a solid pick for kids or adults heading out on camping or hiking trips.”

Complete Buying Guide for Best Sleeping Bag For Trekking

Essential Factors We Consider

When selecting the best sleeping bag for trekking, several factors are paramount. First, temperature rating is critical; ensure it matches the coldest conditions you expect to encounter, with a buffer for safety. Next, weight and compressibility are vital for backpackers where every ounce counts. Look for materials that offer a good warmth-to-weight ratio and pack down small. Durability is also key, as your sleeping bag will endure rough use. Finally, consider the type of insulation—down offers superior warmth-to-weight and compressibility but is expensive and performs poorly when wet, while synthetic insulation is more affordable, retains warmth when damp, and is generally more durable. For more specific temperature needs, check out our guide on the best sleeping bag for 50-degree weather.

Budget Planning

Sleeping bags can range significantly in price. High-performance down bags designed for extreme conditions will be the most expensive. Synthetic bags offer a more budget-friendly alternative without sacrificing too much performance, especially for mild to moderate conditions. For casual trekkers or those just starting, a good synthetic bag can provide excellent value. Always weigh the initial cost against the expected lifespan and performance for your specific trekking needs. Remember, investing in a quality sleeping bag can enhance your overall trekking experience, much like having reliable backpacks for hiking.

Final Thoughts

Choosing the right sleeping bag is a personal decision based on your trekking style, typical destinations, and budget. The options reviewed here represent some of the best on the market, offering a range of features and price points. Always read reviews, compare specifications, and consider how the bag will fit into your overall gear setup, ensuring you’re well-prepared for your next adventure.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What is the most important factor when choosing a trekking sleeping bag?

A: The most critical factor is the temperature rating. You need to ensure your sleeping bag can keep you warm enough for the lowest temperatures you anticipate encountering on your trek. It’s always better to have a bag that’s slightly too warm than one that’s too cold.

Q: How do I choose between down and synthetic insulation for my sleeping bag?

A: Down insulation is lighter, more compressible, and offers better warmth for its weight, making it ideal for serious backpackers. However, it’s more expensive and loses its insulating properties when wet. Synthetic insulation is more affordable, retains warmth when damp, and is easier to care for, making it a great choice for general trekking and humid conditions.

Q: How should I care for my trekking sleeping bag?

A: Always follow the manufacturer’s care instructions. Generally, it’s best to store your sleeping bag loosely (not stuffed in its compression sack) in a dry, breathable place. When it needs cleaning, use a specialized sleeping bag cleaner and follow the washing and drying instructions carefully to maintain its loft and insulating properties.

Q: Are mummy sleeping bags better for trekking than rectangular ones?

A: Mummy sleeping bags are generally preferred for trekking because their tapered shape is more efficient at trapping body heat, making them warmer. They are also typically lighter and more compressible than rectangular bags. Rectangular bags offer more freedom of movement and are often used for warmer weather camping or car camping.

Q: What does a sleeping bag’s temperature rating (e.g., 20°F) actually mean?

A: Temperature ratings for sleeping bags are typically provided as a “comfort” or “limit” rating. The comfort rating indicates the lowest temperature at which an average woman can sleep comfortably. The limit rating is for an average man. It’s advisable to choose a bag rated about 10-15°F lower than the coldest temperature you expect to face to ensure warmth and comfort.

Selecting the best sleeping bag for trekking is a decision that directly impacts your comfort and safety in the wilderness. We’ve presented a range of excellent options designed to suit different needs and budgets. Whether you prioritize ultralight performance, maximum warmth, or budget-friendliness, there’s a sleeping bag here that can elevate your outdoor experience.
