Customer Reviews
Customer Review: “I always wonder why reviewers 1) complain about the fonts being too small, and 2) say they can find better information on the internet. The fonts here are no smaller than what you would find in a typical novel. If 8-point font is a challenge for you, maybe reconsider, but if you can read everyday books without a problem, you’ll do just fine. Now we have the whole issue of “it’s better to just use the internet.” People who say this miss the entire purpose of a guidebook. A travel guide is not simply a directory of listings. It includes historical contexts, cultural insights, and framing sections and chapters to feed your imagination. It also will include discrete reviews and recommendations from seasoned travelers that will help you add authenticity to your trip. A good guidebook does all of these things, and this book delivers in that regard. The practical information needs to be there, of course, but if you’re buying a guide for ONLY the practical information, by all means use the internet. So the plusses are its comprehensiveness. I’ve not found a more thorough guide to this fascinating country which is more, by the way, than the Saxon towns of Transylvania. There is a really excellent chapter on Iasi, a truly fascinating city in Moldavia which is sometimes called Romania’s “second capital” and is an important university town. The chapter on Bucharest is also excellent. There are many sidebars throughout the text which place the entries into historical and cultural context. It’s really well done. Add to this good maps, graphics and photos and what’s not to like?Well, there are some things. First, it’s getting a bit old at this point. A pandemic has happened since this book was last refreshed. Enough said. Also, Rough Guides can be sometimes a bit, well, rough. This guide series began as the go-to guys for budget travel until another big travel publisher we all know came along and stole the thunder, so Rough Guide had to adapt. The problem is, it’s still more hostel than luxury, and that can be frustrating for a traveler interested in a big splash-out. Luxury listings can be thin.So there it is my dear readers. It’s your best Romania guide, and (honestly) the most up to date as of early 2023. Let’s hope to get a refresh soon.”
Customer Review: “The Rough Guide to Romania is a solid little book for planning a vacation in the beautiful country of Romania. Like other Rough Guide books, the guide highlights points of interest in each of the country’s major cities, and gives a brief history for each of the landmarks. The book also contains many color maps to help you find your way around. Personally, I’ve never been to Romania (the wife has), but wanted to get a lay of the land and learn what there is to see before we take the family (once Americans are once again welcomed overseas). If history is your thing (it is one of mine), there is also a brief history of the area starting on page 374. Romania’s history is very interesting, beginning with pre-Roman tribes, teetering on the fulcrum of Eastern and Western influences, and finally emerging from Communist rule within the last 40 years. Very much looking forward to the trip and taking this book (along with some holy water and a wooden stake) with me!”

When choosing the best guide for places to visit in Romania, we evaluate several key factors. First, we look at comprehensiveness—does the guide cover both popular attractions and hidden gems? Next, we assess up-to-date information, especially regarding transport, opening hours, and local events.
