No matter where you go, even in the smallest villages in some of the most undeveloped countries, amazingly will usually have internet Wi-Fi access. I have travelled to Indonesia six times and have spend approximately nine or ten months in total in various parts of the archipelago. My last trip was three months in 2018 through Sumatra and Bali. There is Wi-Fi everywhere in Indonesia. The internet has Google maps, etc., and these maps have hotels on them, so you can see where there are clusters of them. You also have hotel listing sites like Agoda, so you can see pictures and get an idea of prices before you go to look. You will find in these areas that there will also be more hotels that won’t be listed on the internet, or on these listing sites, because they are newer, cheaper, don’t want to pay unfair fees, or bother with the internet, etc., and are better. Once a hotel makes it into a book, standards often go down, and prices go up, due to travel guide book zombies keeping them afloat. Hotel listing sights will have current information. I always wait until I get into a town and have a look around, so I don’t book ahead, but this is personal preference, but I still get on the computer and have a look at all the great information available through these sites.In general, almost all information about any country, especially in Asia, will be outdated before a book even makes it to publishing. A country like Indonesia is super dynamic. Change happens very quickly. All kinds of current information including, history, customs, food, language, how-to info, transportation, recommendations and reviews are up on the web. Lonely Planet books, especially in Asia, are not only a waster of money because the information will often be out of date, but it keeps you from finding the good stuff. Once you get out on the road, talking with other travelers will also be another great way to get good current information. If you want to carry around a useless brick, be my guest, and their Kindle versions, in my experience are even worse. Years ago, I went to one of the places they recommended, and it looked like it had been taken over by a gang and turned into a drug den.In the days before the internet, these types of guidebooks were the only game in town for information. Now, because of the accelerated rate of change in countries, and the availability of internet information, they are actually a complete waste of time and money, and worse, they keep you from finding accurate current reviews and information.”
